RESUMO

Glaucoma valves (GVs) play an essential role in treating glaucoma. However, fibrosis after implantation has limited their long-term success in clinical applications. In this study, we aimed to develop a comprehensive surface-engineering strategy to improve the biocompatibility of GVs by constructing a microenvironment-regulated and dual-hydrophilic antifouling coating on a GV material (silicone rubber, SR). The coating was based on a superhydrophilic polydopamine (SPD) coating with good short-range superhydrophilicity and antifouling abilities. In addition, SPD coatings contain many phenolic hydroxyl groups that can effectively resist oxidative stress and the inflammatory microenvironment. Furthermore, based on its in situ photocatalytic free-radical polymerization properties, the SPD coating polymerized poly 2-methylacryloxyethylphosphocholine, providing an additional long-range hydrophilic and antifouling effect. The in vitro test results showed that the microenvironment-regulated and dual-hydrophilic coatings had anti-protein contamination, anti-oxidation, anti-inflammation, and anti-fiber proliferation capabilities. The in vivo test results indicated that this coating substantially reduced the fiber encapsulation formation of the SR material by inhibiting inflammation and fibrosis. This design strategy for dual hydrophilic coatings with microenvironmental regulation can provide a valuable reference for the surface engineering design of novel medical implantable devices. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: Superhydrophilic polydopamine (SPD) coatings were prepared on silicone rubber (SR) by a two-electron oxidation method. Introduction of pMPC to SPD surface using photocatalytic radical polymerization to obtain a dual-hydrophilic coating. The dual-hydrophilic coating effectively modulates the oxidative and inflammatory microenvironment. This coating significantly reduced protein contamination and adhesion of inflammatory cells and fibroblasts in vitro. The coating-modified SR inhibits inflammatory and fibrosis responses in vivo, promising to serve the glaucoma valves.

Nasolacrimal duct obstruction due to infection, inflammation, or excessive fibroblast proliferation may result in persistent tearing, intraocular inflammation, or even blindness. In this study, surface engineering techniques are applied to nasolacrimal duct stents for the first time. Based on the functioning of marine mussels, "one-pot" and "stepwise" methods were employed to construct a novel multifunctional superhydrophilic PDA/RAP coating using dopamine and rapamycin. Micron-sized rapamycin crystals combined with nano-sized polydopamine particles form a micro-nano topographical structure. Therefore, acting synergistically with in situ-generated hydrophilic groups (amino, carboxyl, and phenolic hydroxyl), they impart excellent and long-lasting superhydrophilicity to the nasolacrimal duct stent. The PDA/RAP coating effectively maintained the stability of the initial microenvironment during stent implantation by inhibiting the onset of acute inflammation and infection during the early stages of implantation. Meanwhile, the rapamycin crystals, supported by the superhydrophilic platform, exhibited a sustained-release capability that helped them to better exert their anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and anti-fibroblast proliferative properties, ensuring conducive conditions for the rapid repair of nasolacrimal duct epithelial cells, verified by a series of experiments. In conclusion, the PDA/RAP hydrophilic coating has anti-inflammatory, antifibrotic, antibacterial, and antithrombotic properties, offering a new strategy to address restenosis following clinical nasolacrimal duct stent implantation.

PURPOSE: To determine the efficacy, safety, predictability, and stability of laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) in the treatment of presbyopia. METHODS: The databases of CNKI, VIP, Wan-Fang, CBM, Chinese Clinical Registry, PubMed, The Cochrane Library, Web of Science, Embase, and ClinicalTrials.gov were searched until March 2023. The authors chose the studies of LASIK in the treatment of presbyopia. Outcomes were efficacy, safety, predictability, and stability. The review was registered in the international platform of registered systematic review and meta-analysis protocols (INPLASY202350005). RESULTS: A total of 28 non-randomized controlled trials (15,861 eyes) were included. The results showed that after LASIK, (1) the distance efficacy decreased (mean difference [MD]: 0.02, 95% CI: 0.0 to 0.03, P < .05) and the near efficacy increased (MD: -0.01, 95% CI: -0.19 to-0.02, P < .05); (2) the distance safety decreased (MD: 0.07, 95% CI: 0.04 to 0.10, P < .0001) and near safety increased (MD: -0.19, 95% CI: -0.39 to 0.02, P > .05); (3) the predictability within ±1.00 and ±0.50 D was 94% (relative risk [RR]: 0.94, 95% CI: 0.90 to 0.98, P < .001) and 80% (RR: 0.80, 95% CI: 0.74 to 0.86, P < .001), respectively; and (4) 6 months postoperatively, the percentage of spherical equivalent changing within ±0.50 D was 95% (RR: 0.95, 95% CI: 0.89 to 0.99, P < .001). CONCLUSIONS: The near efficacy, predictability, and stability of LASIK for presbyopia correction were satisfactory; however, the distance efficacy and distance safety decreased. Corneal disease threatens vision globally. Among corneal diseases, calcific band keratopathy has severe effects on vision owing to its unique location. Currently, ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid (EDTA) chelation remains the most important treatment. However, only the safety of low-dose topical EDTA eye drops is well established in humans. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to determine the safe dose range of EDTA for calcific band keratopathy surgery and its toxic effects on rabbit eyes. Rabbits were administered different doses of EDTA solutions (0.50, 0.20, 0.10, 0.05, and 0.01 M) for twenty minutes. In day seven, the rabbits were euthanized and pathological examination was performed for cornea. We found severe corneal edema in 0.50 M group, while milder edema in lower-concentration treated groups. Followed by corneal thickness measurement, the measured values increase to the peak in post-operative three day (0.20 M group) or one day (lower-concentration groups), then decreased. Groups comparison shown significant difference between BSS control group and higher concentration groups (0.20 M and 0.10 M) (P < 0.001) in observation period, but no significance was observed between low concentration and control group in the day seven after surgery (P > 0.05). Confocal microscopy examination suggested, the number of corneal endothelial cells significantly decreased from 3428.6 ± 180.3 cells/mm2 to 2808 ± 80.6 cells/mm2 in the 0.50 M group, while the lower-concentration groups showed lesser toxic effects on corneal endothelial cells. Finally, our histological examination demonstrated inflammation in each experimental group and dose-dependent, compared with control group. Our study found 0.05 M and 0.01 M EDTA solutions had no obvious toxic effect on the corneal endothelium compared with higher concentration. However, further study of EDTA side effect by clinical trials, and therapeutic effect observation with different concentration are necessary.

OBJECTIVES: To analyse and compare the efficacy of different interventions for myopia prevention and control in children. METHODS: We searched CNKI, VIP, Wan-Fang, CBM, Chinese Clinical Registry, PubMed, The Cochrane Library, Web of Science, Embase and ClinicalTrials.gov from inception to July 2022. We selected randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that included interventions to slow myopia progression in children. The main outcomes included mean annual change in axial length (AL) (millimetres/year) and in refraction (R) (dioptres/year). RESULTS: A total of 80 RCTs (27103 eyes) were included. In comparison with control, orthokeratology (AL, -0.36 [-0.53, -0.20], P < 0.05; R, 0.56 [0.34, 0.77], P < 0.05), 1%Atropine (AL, -0.39 [-0.65, -0.13], P < 0.05; R, 0.54 [0.31, 0.77], P < 0.05), 0.01%Atropine + orthokeratology (AL, -0.47 [-0.80, -0.14], P < 0.05; R, 0.81 [0.43, 1.20], P < 0.05) could significantly slow the progression of myopia; in addition, progressive multi-focal spectacle lenses (PMSL) (0.42, [0.06, 0.79], P < 0.05), bifocal soft contact lenses (0.40, [0.03, 0.77], P < 0.05), 0.5%Atropine (0.67 [0.25, 1.10], P < 0.05), 0.1%Atropine (0.42 [0.15, 0.71], P < 0.05), 0.05%Atropine (0.57 [0.28, 0.86], P < 0.05), 0.01%Atropine (0.33 [0.15, 0.52], P < 0.05), 1%Atropine + bifocal spectacle lenses (BSL) (1.30 [0.54, 2.00], P < 0.05), 1%Atropine + PMSL (0.66 [0.23, 1.10], P < 0.05), 0.01%Atropine + single vision spectacle lenses (SVSL) (0.70 [0.23, 1.10], P < 0.05), 0.01%Atropine + orthokeratology (0.81 [0.43, 1.20], P < 0.05), BSL + Massage (0.85 [0.22, 1.50], P < 0.05), SVSL + Red light (0.59 [0.06, 0.79], P < 0.05) showed significant slowing effect on the increase in R. CONCLUSIONS: This network meta-analysis suggests that the combined measures were most effective in AL and R, followed by Atropine.

Myopia and presbyopia are two major optometry problems facing the whole society. The mechanism of accommodation is strongly related to the treatments of myopia and presbyopia. However, the key mechanism of accommodation has puzzled us for over 400 years and is still not clear at present, leading to the stagnation of prevention and treatment of myopia and presbyopia. With the continued development of experimental technologies and equipment, the approaches to elucidate accommodation's intricacies have become more methodological and sophisticated. Fortunately, some significant progress has been made. This article is to review the evolution of the mechanism of accommodation. Helmholtz proposed a classical theory of "zonules relax during accommodation." In contrast, Schachar put forward a theory of "zonules taut during accommodation." Those hypotheses are relatively complete, but either do not fully explain everything about the accommodation mechanism or lack sufficient experimental and clinical evidence to support them. Then, some contentious issues are discussed in detail to find the truth. Finally, we proposed our hypothesis about accommodation based on the anatomy of the accommodative apparatus.

Hypericum foliosum Aiton is an endemic Azorean Hypericum species. Even though the aerial parts of Hypericum foliosum are not described in any official pharmacopoeia, they are utilized in local traditional medicine due to their diuretic, hepatoprotective, and antihypertensive properties. This plant has previously been the subject of phytochemical characterization and has been studied for its antidepressant activity, showing significant results in animal models. The lack of a description of the main characteristics of the aerial parts, which would be necessary to properly identify this medicinal plant species, contributes to the possibility of misidentification events. We performed macroscopic and microscopic analyses that identified specific differential characteristics, such as the absence of dark glands, the dimensions of the secretory pockets in the leaf, and the presence of translucent glands in the powder. To continue our previous work on the biological activity of Hypericum foliosum, ethanol, dichloromethane/ethanol, and water extracts were prepared and studied for their antioxidant and cytotoxic activity. Extracts showed in vitro selective cytotoxic activity in human lung cancer cell line A549, colon cancer cell line HCT 8, and breast cancer cell line MDA-MB-231, with dichloromethane/ethanol showing higher activity against all cell lines (IC50 values of 71.49, 27.31, and 9.51 µg/mL, respectively). All extracts also showed significant antioxidant activity.

Relationships between meat consumption and gut diseases have been debated for decades, and the gut microbiota plays an important role in this interplay. It was speculated that the gut microbiota and relevant indicators of hosts with different body weight indexes (BMIs) might respond differentially to meat-based diet alterations, since lean and obese hosts have different gut microbiota composition. Forty-five young Chinese volunteers were recruited and assigned to high-, middle- and low-BMI groups. All of the volunteers were given a beef-based diet for 2 weeks and subsequently with a chicken-based diet for another 2 weeks. Body weight and blood indexes were measured, and fecal samples were obtained for 16S rRNA sequencing, metabolome and proteome analyses. The fecal metabolites of the low-BMI volunteers showed greater sensitivity to meat-based diet alterations. In contrast, the fecal proteome profiles and blood indexes of the high- and middle-BMI volunteers indicated greater sensitivity to meat-based diet alterations. Replacing the beef-based diet with the chicken-based diet largely changed operational taxonomic units of Bacteroides genus, and thus probably induced downregulation of immunoglobulins in feces. Compared with the beef-based diet, the chicken-based diet decreased inflammation-related blood indexes, especially in high- and middle-BMI volunteers. This work highlighted the role of BMI as an important factor predicting changes in gut homeostasis in response to meat consumption. Compared with the chicken-based diet, the beef-based diet may induce more allergic and inflammation-related responses in high- and middle- BMI Chinese at the current level.

The coordinated relationship between urban population-land spatial patterns (UPLSPs) and ecological efficiency (EE) is conducive not only to the rational utilization of resources and environment and the sustainable development of society, but also to the provision of a living environment that benefits public health. Identifying the coupling relationship of urban development and EE can provide critical information for urban planning. Previous studies have mainly focused on the coupling relationship between urban population and land, urbanization, and ecological development, while ignoring that between UPLSPs and EE. This study integrates several models to construct a novel framework for coupling UPLSPs and EE. Taking Hubei Province as the research area, we calculate the UPLSPs, EE, and their coupling coordination degree for 12 cities from 2000 to 2019. The paper offers several conclusions. (1) the urban population-land spatial matching degree increased, but the overall matching level was not high; the average value of EE showed an "N"-shaped change trajectory, and its overall level was low, with small changes and obvious regional differences. (2) The average value of the coupling coordination degree between UPLSPs and EE was a slow upward trend, with a radial distribution high in the middle and low in the periphery. There was conflict between the spatial patterns and EE, and the former restricted the development of the latter. (3) There were strong correlations between coordination degree and various indicators of UPLSPs and EE. While we should revitalize the stock of construction land and optimize the upgrading of the industrial structure, we also must coordinate human and land resources and the ecological environment, and narrow regional development differences. This study provides a new framework for urban environmental assessment and urban planning decision-making.

PURPOSE: This study attempted to estimate the impact of eye-preserving therapies for the long-term prognosis of patients with advanced retinoblastoma with regard to overall survival and ocular salvage. DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study covering all 31 provinces (38 retinoblastoma treating centers) of mainland China. PARTICIPANTS: One thousand six hundred seventy-eight patients diagnosed with group D or E retinoblastoma from January 2006 through May 2016. METHODS: Chart review was performed. The patients were divided into primary enucleation and eye-preserving groups, and they were followed up for survival status. The impact of initial treatment on survival was evaluated by Cox analyses. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Overall survival and final eye preservation. RESULTS: After a median follow-up of 43.9 months, 196 patients (12%) died, and the 5-year overall survival was 86%. In total, the eyeball preservation rate was 48%. In this cohort, 1172 patients (70%) had unilateral retinoblastoma, whereas 506 patients (30%) had bilateral disease. For patients with unilateral disease, 570 eyes (49%) underwent primary enucleation, and 602 patients (51%) received eye-preserving therapies initially. During the follow-up (median, 45.6 months), 59 patients (10%) from the primary enucleation group and 56 patients (9.3%) from the eye-preserving group died. Multivariate Cox analyses indicated no significant difference in overall survival between the 2 groups (hazard ratio [HR], 1.25; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.85-1.84; P = 0.250). For patients with bilateral disease, 95 eyes (19%) underwent primary enucleation, and 411 patients (81%) received eye-preserving therapies initially. During the follow-up (median, 40.1 months), 12 patients (13%) from the primary enucleation group and 69 patients (17%) from the eye-preserving group died. For bilateral retinoblastoma with the worse eye classified as group E, patients undergoing primary enucleation exhibited better overall survival (HR, 2.35; 95% CI, 1.10-5.01; P = 0.027); however, this survival advantage was not evident until passing 22.6 months after initial diagnosis. CONCLUSIONS: Eye-preserving therapies have been used widely for advanced retinoblastoma in China. Patients with bilateral disease whose worse eye was classified as group E and who initially underwent eye-preserving therapies exhibited a worse overall survival. The choice of primary treatment for advanced retinoblastoma should be weighed carefully.

A plasmonic double periodic arranged nanocone array (DPANA) integrated by nanotips and nanogaps exhibit strong capability of light compression, and thus lead to extremely enhanced electric near-field intensity. The DPANA is fabricated by the self-assembled mask integrated with the inductively couple plasma (ICP) etching technology. Finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulations suggest that the metallized DPANA can generate a strong hotspot at the sharp tip apex and the nanogap between adjacent sharp tips. The electric-field enhancement characteristic is firstly verified with the help of the second-order surface nonlinear optical response of the metallized DPANA. The surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) examination of the metallized DPANA exhibits high sensitivity due to clearly presenting the Raman spectra of Rhodamine-6G (R6G) with concentrations down to 10 pM and has excellent uniformity, time stability, and recyclability, simultaneously. Furthermore, the principle demonstration of SERS practical application is also performed for thiram. This as-prepared SERS substrate has great potential application for trace amount detection.

The rapid development of urbanization has had a dramatic impact on the economy, society and environment in China. In this context, the coordination relationship between population urbanization and land urbanization is essential for achieving sustainable urbanization. Based on the statistical data from 2007-2017 in the Yangtze River Economic Belt (YEB), this paper established the multi-dimensional coordination evaluation (MDCE) model by using the speed coordination evaluation (SCE) model, the level consistency evaluation (LCE) model, the entropy method and the space matching evaluation (SME) model to evaluate the coordination relationship between population urbanization and land urbanization from the speed-level-space perspective. The results showed that from 2007 to 2017: 1) the development speed of population urbanization and land urbanization in the YEB were more and more coordinated, and the speed of population urbanization lagged behind that of land urbanization. In addition, the overall development speed of the 11 provinces declined, and most of them were characterized by excessive development of land urbanization. 2) the development level of population urbanization and land urbanization in the YEB were all high, but the development level of population urbanization was lower than that of land urbanization. Further, the development level of the 11 provinces remained stable and high, and continuously improved. 3) the space matching of population urbanization and land urbanization in the YEB had a high degree of coordination, and the space matching degree of population urbanization was higher than that of land urbanization. Moreover, the space matching of most provinces in the region had declined, but the change was small. Finally, this paper proposes the policy recommendations on the coordinated development of population and land urbanization at the institutional, market and management levels to achieve coordinated and sustainable urbanization.

Exploring the changes of ecosystem services value caused by land use transformation driven by urbanization is crucial for ensuring the safety of the regional ecological environment and for enhancing the value of ecosystem services. Based on the land use remote sensing data during the rapid urbanization development period of Hubei Province from 1995 to 2015, this study analyzed the characteristics of land use/land cover change and land use transformation. The spatial-temporal response characteristics and evolution of ecosystem services value (ESV) to land use transformation driven by urbanization were measured by equivalent factor method, spatial autocorrelation analysis, hot spot analysis and gravity model. We found that: (1) Driven by urbanization, the most significant feature of land use transformation in Hubei Province was the expansion of the built-up land and the significant reduction of cropland and forest, among which 90% of the new built-up land was converted from cropland and forest. (2) This land use transformation became the main source of ESV losses. Especially, the sharp increase of the built-up land from 2010 to 2015, occupying cropland and forest, resulted in ESV losses of nearly USD 320 million. The service capacity of climate regulation, soil conservation, gas regulation and food production undertaken by cropland and forest decreased. (3) The ecosystem services value in the study area showed spatial distribution characteristics of high in the west and low in the middle and east regions. The center of gravity of ESV shifted from northwest to southeast. Due to the sharp increase of the built-up land from 2010 to 2015, the center of gravity shift rebounded. This study can help policymakers better understand the trade-offs between land use transformation and ecosystem services driven by urbanization.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the clinical effect of acupoint injection of houttuynia cordata as the accessory treatment on dry eyes of convalescent herpes simplex keratitis (HSK). METHODS: A total of 60 patients with dry eyes of convalescent HSK were randomized into an observation group and a control group, 30 cases in each one. In the control group, the artificial tears and anti-inflammatory drugs were combined in treatment. In the observation group, on the base of the treatment as the control group, the acupoint injection of houttuynia cordata at Neiqiuhou (Extra) was combined, 3 mL each time, once a day. After consecutive 3 injections, the injection was adjusted to be once every two days, consecutively for 3 times. The treatment for 6 times was as one course and one course of treatment was required. Separately, before treatment and in 7, 15 and 30 days after treatment, the changes of the scores of visual analogue scale (VAS), theresults of SchirmerⅠtest (SⅠT), the tear break-up time (BUT) and the score of corneal fluorescein staining (CFS) were observed and analyzed in the patients of the two groups. RESULTS: In 7, 15 and 30 days after treatment, VAS scores and CFS scores were all reduced as compared with those before treatment in the patients of the two groups (P<0.05), and the scores of VAS and CFS in the observation group were lower than those in the control group (P<0.05). In 7, 15 and 30 days after treatment, the values of SⅠT and BUT were all increased as compared with those before treatment in the patients of the two groups (P<0.05), and the values in the observation group were higher than the control group in 15 and 30 days after treatment (P<0.05). CONCLUSION: Acupoint injection of houttuynia cordata promotes corneal epithelial recovery, reduces the discomfort symptoms as well as increases tear secretion and the stability of tear film in dry eyes of convalescent herpes simplex keratitis.

Long non­coding RNAs (lncRNAs) and microRNAs (miRs) have been reported to regulate disease progression in numerous types of disease, including retinoblastoma (Rb). Therefore, the present study aimed to investigate the effects of the lncRNA FEZ family zinc finger 1 antisense RNA 1 (FEZF1­AS1) on Rb and to determine its possible mechanism of action. Reverse transcription­quantitative PCR and western blot analysis were conducted to detect the gene or protein expression. Cell Counting Kit­8, wound healing and transwell invasion assays were performed to estimate the capabilities of cell viability, invasion and migration. The potential association between FEZF1­AS1 and miR­1236­3p in Y79 cells was measured via dual­luciferase reporter assay. The results of the present study revealed that the levels of FEZF1­AS1 were significantly upregulated in different Rb cell lines, with the most prominent upregulation observed in Y79 cells. In addition, the cell viability, invasive and migratory abilities, and the ability to undergo epithelial­mesenchymal transition (EMT), were significantly inhibited following the transfection of short hairpin RNA (shRNA)­FEZF1­AS1 into Y79 cells. Further experimental validation confirmed that miR­1236­3p may be a direct target of FEZF1­AS1. Notably, the miR­1236­3p inhibitor was discovered to reverse the inhibitory effects of shRNA­FEZF1­AS1 on cell viability, invasion, migration and EMT. In conclusion, the findings of the present study suggested that lncRNA­FEZF1­AS1 may promote the viability, migration, invasion and EMT of Rb cells by modulating miR­1236­3p.

Recently, with the rapid increase of urban population and industrial agglomeration, the price of construction land has increased, and construction land has become increasingly scarce. Therefore, how to improve the construction land use quality (CLUQ) becomes more and more important. The purpose of the study is to evaluate CLUQ in China's major cities and to analyze the dominant obstacle factors for quality improvement in order to provide policy advice for construction land management. This study adapts the data from 2014 to 2016 and constructs the evaluation framework of CLUQ involving economic quality, social quality, and ecological quality of construction land to evaluate and analyze CLUQ with the synthetic evaluation model, coupling evaluation model, and obstacle diagnosis model (ECO model). This study shows that the synthetic CLUQ of 23 cities out of 36 major cities in China shows a general increasing state. The economic quality of 26 cities out of 36 major cities in China has increased, while the social and ecological quality of 20 out of 36 major cities in China has decreased. In terms of spatial characteristics, the synthetic quality in the east and southwest of China is relatively high; in terms of spatial trend, the synthetic quality in longitude increases from west to east, and it shows an inverted U-shaped state in latitude. Moreover, economic development is the main obstacle factor for the improvement of CLUQ in Hohhot, Lanzhou, Urumqi, and Changchun. Social development results in the CLUQ lagging in Beijing, Guiyang, Shanghai, Xining, and Chongqing. Ecological development has a negative impact in that of Harbin, Qingdao, and Wuhan. Furthermore. The improvement of CLUQ lies in the coupling and coordinated development of economic, social, and ecological quality. For those with a low coupling degree, the targeted suggestions are given for different types based on city's quadrant distribution.

We present a method for Raman examination using a silver-nanoparticles (Ag-NPs) coated D-shaped fiber (DSF) internally excited via an in-fiber azimuthally polarized beam (APB) generated by an acoustically induced fiber grating. Simulation results show that an electric-field intensity enhancement factor can be effectively improved under APB excitation compared with the linear polarization beam (LPB) excitation, because the strong gap-mode is uniformly generated between two adjacent Ag NPs on the surface of the DSF planar side. Experimental results show that the Raman signal intensity of the methylene blue (MB) detected by DSF in the case of APB excitation is ∼4.5 times as strong as that of LPB excitation, and the Raman detection sensitivity is ∼10-9 M. The time stability of this method is also tested to be guaranteed.

Single-layer fuel cells (SLFCs) based on mixed semiconductors and ionic conductors demonstrate  simplified material preparation and fabrication procedure and possess high performance potentially. However, the operational stability and principle of SLFCs have not yet been convinced of either commercialization or fundamental interests. We hereby report on the employment of a perovskite oxide-based phase-structured redox-stable semiconductor prior to determining a possible solution that improves the durability of the SLFC. Feasible working principles are established and an in-depth understanding of the short-circuit-free phenomenon in SLFCs with the mixed ionic and electronic conductors is provided. Additionally, a smart material design and cell structure processing are also proposed. An extended nonstop testing period of up to 2 days confirms the project feasibility and improved durability of the SLFCs, achieved by replacing the unstable lithiated oxide phase with redox-stable perovskite oxide, though the electrochemical performance is sacrificed. The precipitated metal/alloy nanoparticle on perovskite oxide not only improves the electrode reaction kinetics but also facilitates the charge separation and ionic conduction in SLFCs, consequently enhancing the fuel cell performance and electrical efficiency. The results confirmed the potential of stable operation for future practical deployment of SLFCs via appropriate selection of material and cell structure design. It is greatly believed that the physical junction plays a crucial role in overcoming the internal short-circuit issue of SLFCs.

Vascular endothelial growth factor B (VEGF-B) was reported to be angiogenic, and it was considered as a neuroprotective agent in mouse retinal ganglion cells following optic nerve crush. Thus, it was necessary to investigate whether VEGF-B contributes to the process of retinal and choroidal neovascularization. We aimed to investigate the effects of VEGF-B on proliferation and migration in EA.Hy926 cells. The proliferation of cells was analyzed by cell counting kit 8 assay, and the migration of cells was evaluated by a modified Boyden chamber assay. The levels of phospho-ERK1/2 (P-ERK1/2), ERK1/2, phospho-p38 and p38 were detected by western blotting. The results showed that VEGF-B induced proliferation and migration of EA.Hy926 cells (P < 0.01 and P < 0.05, respectively), and ERK1/2 and p38 phosphorylation were significantly activated. Our study suggested that VEGF-B was an angiogenesis factor in vitro and that ERK1/2 and p38-related signaling pathways were involved in these VEGF-B activities.

OBJECTIVE: To express and purify the human papillomavirus type 16 (HPV16) E2 protein in prokaryotic bacteria and prepare the antiserum of HPV16 E2. METHODS: After amplified by PCR, HPV16 E2 was inserted into pET21b vector. The recombinant pET21b-HPV16E2 vector was transfected into E.coli BL21 (DE3). Expression product was identified after induction. Through purification, denaturation and renaturation, soluble protein was obtained. With the HPV16 E2 protein, we immunized BALB/c mice and examined mouse IFN-γ, CD4(+); T cells, CD8(+); T cells, CD4/CD8 ratio and antiserum titer. RESULTS: Restriction digestion and DNA sequencing showed pET21b-HPV16E2 was constructed successfully. Relative molecular mass (Mr;) of HPV16 E2 was 42 000 in SDS-PAGE and the specificity of the protein was confirmed with Western blotting. The antiserum could specifically bind with HPV16 E2 protein. In the immunized BALB/c mice, antiserum titre, CD4(+); T cell count and CD4/CD8 ratio increased, while mouse IFN-γ did not change obviously. CONCLUSION: Soluble HPV16 E2 protein was obtained successfully. The antiserum of high titer against HPV16 E2 was prepared in mice.
